Mike is the son of the late Salvador “Sub” Molina and Mary Choy Foo Molina. He is the youngest of five children (Rhonda Lincoln, Warren Molina, Roberta Souza, and Laverne Ah You) and is of Spanish, Hawaiian, Chinese and English heritage. His father, Sub was the band leader of the popular Molina Brothers Orchestra which entertained Maui County residents for over 50 years. Both Sub and his wife Mary, would later own and operate the Club Rodeo, a popular restaurant and night club in Upcountry, Maui.
Mike was born in Wailuku, Maui and raised in Makawao. He attended Makawao Elementary School and Maui High School. After High School, Mike joined the military and served in the United States Air Force and Hawaii Air National Guard. Mike attended the University of Hawaii at Hilo and received degrees in Sociology and Education. After graduation, he was hired by the State of Hawaii Department of Education and first taught at Ka’u High School on the Big Island. He later returned to Maui to teach at Lahaina Intermediate and Kalama Intermediate Schools. In the late 1990’s, Mike received teacher recognition awards by the Upcountry Rotary Club, and the Volunteer Center of Maui and was recognized as an “Outstanding Teacher” in the Honolulu Star Bulletin. As a teacher, Mike was instrumental in organizing the students and parents of upcountry community to establish the first recycling center in Makawao.
The Molina family has a long history of public service. Mike's uncles, John Bulgo and Manuel Molina were elected to the former Maui County Board of Supervisors now known as the Maui County Council, having served for nearly two decades. His cousin, Joseph Bulgo also served in the Maui County Council. Mike was elected to the Maui County Council and served from 2001-2010. He was hired by former Mayor Alan Arakawa as an Executive Assistant from 2011-2018. In 2018, Mike returned to the County Council and was re-elected in 2020. Mike Molina is currently serving his seventh term on the Maui County Council and represents the Makawao-Haiku-Paia district. He has authored major housing and environmental legislations such as the Affordable Housing Fund, the First Time Homebuyers Fund, the Outdoor Lighting and the Plastic Bag Reduction Laws and is currently the Chairman of the Government Relations, Ethics and Transparency Committee.
Along with his work on the Council, Mike is a substitute teacher and currently serves as an officer of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), Kalama Intermediate School Council and Maui Evangelical Church Board. He participated in various community organizations as a member and in leadership roles for the Maui Economic Opportunity Board, Makawao Main Street Association, Hawaii State Teachers Association Board (Maui), and the Maui Lions Club.
Mike is married to his Maui High School classmate and wife of 30 years, Cielo Batan Molina. Mike and Cielo have three children: Ian (38), Aimee (34), and Malia (25); and five grandchildren: Emily, Drew, Taylor, Avery and Sophia. Trivia: Mike is an avid Minnesota Vikings fan - hence, his campaign colors: yellow and purple!
